How to Reach Gokarna


1. If you are coming by airways than the closest airport for you will be the Dabolim Airport in Goa. This airport is well linked with the big Indian cities and some other countries as well. You can take cab/bus from Dabolim airport to Gokarna which is about 160 kms away. By bus/cab it takes 3 to 4 hours.

2. Though Gokarna has a railway station yet this station is not connected with the big cities/towns of India. The Ankola railway station will be the closest station for you if you are coming by railways. From Ankola you can hire a cab for Gokarna as the distance is only 20 kms.

3. You can get to Gokarna Beach by roadways as this town is well connected with the cities/towns of Karnataka and Goa. You can choose buses or cabs as per your convenience.

According to the locals, one should bathe in the sacred water of the Gokarna beach first and then visit the Mahabaleshwar Temple to worship the Deity. You can see huge crowd here specially during Maha Shivratri. The view from the beach is also beautiful.

2. Kudle Beach

Located on the Konkan coastline of the Arabian Sea, this pristine C-shaped beach is only 5.5 kms away from the town of Gokarna. Kudle Beach is a great option if you are looking for a beach vacation in solitude. You will get a number of lodging options and cafes near the beach.

Waking on the golden sands of Kudle Beach amid the groves of coconut trees will rejuvenate you for a new start. The panoramic view of the low tidal sea from the cliff of the hills surrounding the sea is also breathtaking. You can also enjoy surfing and yoga sessions here.

3. OM Beach

The most surprising fact associated with Om Beach is its shape, which is like the ‘OM’ sign. The ‘OM’ is considered as a holy sign for the Hindus. So, the devotees consider this beach as a holy one. This beach is at a walking distance from the Kudle Beach and just 6.5 kms away from the Gokarna Town.

Paradise Beach is also recognized as Full Moon Beach and is very close to the Half Moon Beach. You can get to this beach by a trek from Half Moon Beach or also by motor boat. This beach is surrounded by rocks which makes it accessible only via boat or by walking. That is why; you will experience fewer crowds here. This is an ideal place for camping and relaxing.

5. Half Moon Beach

6. Mahabaleshwar Temple

Mahabaleshwar Temple is one of the famed pilgrim destinations among the Hindus of South India. This temple is dedicated to the Deity Shiva. The ‘Linga’ worshipped here is recognized as ‘Atma Linga’.

According to Hindus, this temple is called as ‘Daskshin Kashi’ and is considered as sacred as the ‘Kashi Vishwanath’ in Varanasi. Mahabaleshwar Temple is a 4th century temple constructed in Dravidian Style by stones of white granite. The idol of the deity worshipped here is believed to be nearly 1500 years old. 7. Mirjan Fort

This fort is positioned on the banks of Aghanashini River and is nearly 22 kms away from the Gokarna town. You can hire a taxi or bike to visit this place. This fort is under the supervision of the Archeological Survey of India and is open from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm all the days.

This fort was constructed under the benefaction of Queen Chennabharadevi in 16th century. She was famed as the Indian Pepper Queen. Mirjan Fort was once an important centre for spice trade from India but after the British conquered India, they used this fort as their armory. This fort is surrounded by picturesque scenery and comprises some fascinating works of art such as gold coins, clay tablets, Chinese porcelain and Islamic inscriptions which were unearthed in the year 2001 by ASI. This place is associated with many historical events and is a must visit place for the history lovers.

8. Koti Tirtha

Koti Tirtha is a huge sacred pond located near the Mahabaleshwar temple in Gokarna town. This pond is bordered by many other temples. Before performing any rituals the pilgrims bathe here. 

Koti Tirtha is also used for immersing the idols of various Deities. According to legends, this sacred man made pond is considered as the source of a number of springs. Do visit this place to give your trip a spiritual and peaceful touch.

9. Maha Ganpati Temple

This temple is situated very close to the Mahabaleshwar temple in Gokarna town and it allures a huge number of devotees all through the year. Maha Ganpati temple is dedicated to the Deity Ganesha and is among the sacred pilgrimages in Gokarna. This temple was constructed in Dravidian architectural style. 10. Yana

Yana is a quirky little village or you can say a small hill station in the Uttara Kannada District, Karnataka. This village is nearly 25 kms away from the Kumta town and 46 kms away from Gokarna town. Yana gained popularity among the tourists and adventure lovers due to its ancient rock formations which are very unique hillocks of black colored crystalline limestones. The chief attractions among the rock formations are the Bhairaveshwara and the Mohini peaks which are 120 meters and 90 meters high respectively.

According to the legends, this hill station is associated with a mythological character called Bhasmasura. Lord Vishnu became a beautiful lady called Mohini and in disguise killed Bhasmasura at this place called Yana. This place is full of picturesque, unexplored locations, dense woods and blossoming greenery. At the foothills of the Bhairaveshwara Shikhara there is cave temple of Lord Shiva and at the foot of Mohini Shikhara you will find the temple of Goddess Parvati. This location is a must visit place for the nature lovers and adventure lovers.

11. Vibhooti Falls

This is a beautiful waterfall in the serene village of Yana. This waterfall is very close to the famed rock formations of Yana called Bhairaveshwara Shikhara and Mohini Shikhara. The water falls from the huge rocks of limestones in steps and the crystal clear water amid the dense woods make this place a perfect summer gateway.

Vibhooti Falls is open all days from 6:00 am to 6:00 pm. This spot is worth visiting while you are in a trip to Yana.

Things to Remember


Keep a good quality sun protection lotion to prevent your skin from tanning.

Keep some accessories like hats, sunglasses, umbrella etc.

Keep comfortable clothes specially cotton clothes as humidity is very high here.

Keep a good quality mosquito repellent lotion while you are in Gokarna Beach.

The market closes at 9:30 pm as it is a small town.

Big resort options are not available in Gokarna but you will get home stays and small hotels to stay.

You will get Bikes on rent in Gokarna and they charge 300 bucks per day.

Cab/ auto options are not available, to roam from one place to the other walking or taking Bike on rent are the best options.

Near Kudle Beach you will get better options for dinner and lunch.

Alcohol is available only in Gokarna town and near Kudle and Om Beaches.


Best Time to Visit Gokarna


1. Summers from April to June are very hot and humid in Gokarna. The temperature rises to a maximum of 39 degrees. So this period is not comfortable for enjoying in beach and sightseeing.

2. Monsoons from July to September are comparatively pleasant. Gokarna receives plentiful amount of rainfall. So keep raincoat/umbrella with you if you planning Gokarna trip in monsoon. The excursion via forests will be little difficult during rains as the terrain becomes slippery.

3. Winters from October to March are ideal for an unforgettable excursion of Gokarna. The temperature varies from 30 degrees to 16 degrees and as usual the humidity remains very less during this time.
