The stunning Island in the Andaman archipelago, Havelock Island has gained popularity among the tourists around the globe in recent years. From the pristine beaches to the verdant mangroves and from exploring the stretched jungle trails to diving in the clear water of the Bay of Bengal, Havelock Island has everything to offer which a beach lover will love to include in its trip.

This Island got its name from a British General, Henry Havelock. Out of approximately 550 Islands of the Andaman and Nicobar Union Territory, only 9 Islands are open for tourism worldwide and among them Havelock Island is the most visited one. Recently, the beaches of this Island have made to get listed in Best Beaches in the World.

How to Reach Havelock Island 

There are two main ways by which you can get to Havelock Island. Port Blair being the only city in the Andaman archipelago, has the only port and airport. Regular ferryboats are available from Chennai, Vishakhapatnam, Odisha (Paradip Port) and Kolkata which will take 2-4 days to reach Port Blair.

The second & the most comfortable option which will save your time as well is by airways. Direct flights to Port Blair airport or Veer Savarkar International airport are available from Delhi, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Vizag, Chennai and Kolkata. If you are coming from other parts of India/world than you have to first reach these destinations and then take a flight to Port Blair.

From Port Blair you will get both Government and private ferries for Havelock Island. Though Government ferries are cheap but you have to stand on a queue for long time for your chance. The Government ferries charges 300-400 bucks per person for regular tickets and 500-700 bucks for AC tickets and these ferries are available from 6:30 am to 9:30 am & 2:30 pm to 4:30 pm.

Private ferries like Makruzz are a better option and you can book tickets for Makcruzz online also prior to your trip.

NOTE: Ferry options are limited from Port Blair to Havelock Island. So it will be better if you book your tickets 2-3 months prior to your trip.

Permits for Foreign Travelers

The Andaman and Nicobar archipelago is controlled by the Central Government of India directly as it is a Union Territory. Due to this reason, the backpackers travelling to Andaman need some permits called Restricted Area Permit. This permit can be taken from Immigration Authorities in the Port Blair airport.

You can also clear your immigration prior to your Andaman Trip from the Foreign Registration Offices in metro –cities of India like Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai and Kolkata.

Places to Visit in Havelock Island

Havelock Island has a number of beaches to visit and these beaches are categorized by numbers. The must visit beaches in Havelock Island are listed below:

1. Beach No.1

When you will reach Havelock Island from Port Blair by ferry, the first beach you will see is the Beach no. 1 which is also called Havelock jetty. This beach is not ideal for swimming or water sports as it is bordered by dense forests but you can enjoy the views of sunset here.

2. Beach No.2

This is a not so popular beach unless you are interested to learn scuba diving. Most of the schools of scuba diving use this beach to help the tourists learn scuba diving. The course ranges from 2500 bucks to 3500 bucks.

How to Reach

Beach No. 2 is connected with Beach No. 1 via rocky trails. You will also get autos/buses for Beach no. 2 from the Havelock Jetty.

3. Radhanagar Beach or Beach No. 7

Radhanagar beach also called as Beach no. 7 is a popular beach of Havelock Island. The white sand, clear blue sky and the clear water of the sea makes it a picture perfect location. From morning 10:00 am to evening 4:00 pm you will see great crowd in this beach. Radhanagar Beach is declared by Times Magazine as the World’s 7th Best Beach. But unlike other beaches of the world, this semi-circular shaped beach is still less crowd due to very less information available about this beautiful place on internet.

The staying options are also about 10-15 kms away from Radhanagar beach. Developed beach shacks, lifeguard patrol and changing rooms are also available in this beach but no water activities are available in this beach.

You can capture the views of sunrise and sunset in Radhanagar Beach. You can enjoy a forest trail in the dense mangroves and palm trees bordering this beach. Lying down on the white sand of this beach and enjoying sun bathe will make your trip amazing.

How to Reach

To reach Radhanagar beach, the best option is to hire a bike on rent. Otherwise, you can opt for the options like cabs, taxis or autos & cheaper options like sharing jeeps/buses.

4. Vijaynagar Beach or Beach no. 5

The spectacularly lovely Vijaynagar Beach is also called as Beach no. 5. Nestled in the lap of nature, this sublime beach is visited mostly for fishing, bird watching, trekking and water sport activities.  Water sports like Kayaking, Swimming, Banana Boat Rides, Snorkelling, Submarine Ride, Sea Walk and Jet Skiing are available here. This is the most loved beach in the Havelock Island for bleached corals and shallow water. 

A big part of this beach are occupied by Havelock Island beach resorts so, it feels like kind of private beach here. The trees surrounding this beach are low forming natural shades to sit or lie down and spend some time with nature in this solitude. Vijaynagar beach is a backpackers hub and if you are a backpacker than, you must stay near this beach to enjoy the company of like-minded people. You will also get bamboo cottages for staying near this beach which charges from 1000-1600 bucks per day.

How to Reach

You can hire a bike or take auto rickshaw to reach Vijaynagar beach. You will also get AC buses from the Havelock Jetty for Vijaynagar beach which charges 60 bucks per person.

5. Govindnagar Beach or Beach No. 3

This beach is named after the nearby village Govindnagar. Though this beach is not among the most visited one yet this is a paradise for scuba diving. You will get all important offices and ATMs near this beach only and some cheap options of dhabas are also available here.

While enjoying scuba diving in the shallow water of the sea you can explore the deep coral beds and amazing water species under the sea. The main crowds in this beach are the tourists staying in this beach resorts.

How to Reach

You will get buses from the Beach no. 1 also called Havelock jetty for Govindnagar beach or else you can hire bikes.

6. Elephant Beach

Elephant beach is also visited by a number of Indian and foreign tourists. This beach was hit by Tsunami and the houses and forests surrounding this beach were almost washed away by those giant tides. You can see the traces here till date. 

Here also you can try scuba diving and see the sights of marine life under the Bay of Bengal. You can also indulge in water sports like Jet Skiing, Kayaking, Banana Boat rides and many more. Trekking in the verdant hill surrounding Elephant beach is also a thrilling experience.

How to Reach

Buses are available from the Havelock Jetty for Elephant Beach, which is only 15 minutes away. The option of renting a bike is always there. You can also reach Elephant beach by taking a ferry from the jetty which charges 900-1500 bucks for round trips.

7. Kalapathar Beach

As the name suggests, this is a black rocky beach which is located 2 to 3 kms away from the Vijaynagar beach. The view of turquoise water amid the rocky shores is magnificent and make you stay a longer in this serene ambience.

The village near this beach is called Kalapathar village which you can also explore to see the local fruit and vegetable plantations and also the friendly village people.

How to Reach

From the jetty you will get bus for Kalapathar village two times in a day, one in the morning and another in the evening. You can rent a bicycle or a bike for transportation.

Necessary Travelling Tips

No internet is there in Havelock Island which can hamper your card transactions and hotel bookings.

Keep sufficient amount of cash with you during this trip as card transaction is not acceptable in most of the hotels and restaurants due to low connectivity of network.

Carry some accessories like hats, sunglasses etc.

Carry a good quality sunscreen lotion and a mosquito repellent lotion in this beach island.

Taking a bike on rent is very much recommendable as transportation is not frequent here.

The bike charge is 400 to 600 bucks per day.

If you hire a taxi/cab, than save the number of the taxi/cab driver to call him whenever you need him as you won’t get cab service everywhere in this island.

This island is safe for travelling but it is not advisable to go too far alone.

As this place has high humidity, it is advisable to wear comfortable clothes specially cotton clothes.

Do not take the forest trails alone and walk carefully as the islands of Andaman has a number of poisonous reptiles.

Do not wear short dresses or slippers while walking inside the forests for safety from lethal snakes, insects etc.

You will not get too many options of food here but you will get fresh sea food, Indian food and Chinese food here. South Indian and Bengali delicacies are a must try in the shacks of Havelock Island.

Try some Chinese cuisines in the pretty little shack named Anju Coco.

Best time to visit Havelock Island

1. During summer from April to June the Havelock Island weather varies from 25 degrees to 35 degrees. Due to extreme heat and humidity this period is not recommendable for a trip to Havelock Island.

2. Monsoon from July to September is pleasant as during this time Havelock Island receives plentiful of rainfall. So, you can visit this island in monsoon to enjoy views of the lush greenery and serene landscapes.

3. In winter, the temperature ranges from 18 degrees to 26 degrees. So, this is a perfect time to plan a vacation here in this pristine island of Andaman.
