As we booked our hotel in advance and it had pick and drop facility, so, after reaching Jaisalmer bus stand we got into the hotel’s jeep waiting for us at the bus stand. We booked Hotel Qutub Villa Jaisalmer. This hotel is constructed by yellow sand stones and the rooms are really nice and spacious. After having breakfast from a nearby restaurant we decided to explore the Jaisalmer Fort.

This imperial fort is located at the heart of Jaisalmer City. This fort is amongst the biggest forts in the world and is erected on an altitude of 250 feet on Trikuta Hill. Jaisalmer fort is also popular as ‘Golden Fort’ as it was constructed by yellow sandstones by a Rajput Rawal Jaisal in the year 1156 AD. When sunlight falls on this fort, everything looks like gold and the view is just splendid. This fort is one of the famed tourist spots in Jaisalmer and is among the few forts in the globe where people still resides.

Day 2 in Jaisalmer

Next day, we had our breakfast at 8:30 am and after that we started our journey for the abandoned village of Kuldhara. The Dynasty Desert camp arranges sightseeing trips also and they arranged a cab for us to visit Kuldhara. From our camp the Kuldhara village was 40 kms away and it took 50 mins to get there as the roads were in good condition.

Way to Kuldhara Village

On the way to Kuldhara, we witnessed least vegetation and hardly any presence of human. The heat was extreme at noon time yet we were very excited to visit that haunted village as we heard many folklores about this village.

Finally we reached Kuldhara…..

1. Kuldhara Village

According to the legends, this was once the village of the Paliwal Brahmins nearly 200 years back. During that time, the Jaisalmer’s Diwan, Salim Singh used to harass these villagers by collecting huge tax from them. One day, Salim Singh saw the daughter of the Village chief. As she was very beautiful, Salim Singh wanted to get her forcefully. When the villagers tried to stop him for his bad intensions, he warned them that they have to pay additional taxes if they stop him.

As no other options left for the poor villagers, they decided to abandon this village and one night all the residents of the Kuldhara village left the village secretly and cursed this village that no one will be able to resettle in this village. Because of this curse by the Paliwals, Kuldhara Village is an abandoned village from the last 200 years. According to some people, this place is haunted as well. So, a visit to this place after sunset is not allowed. This spot is under the supervision of the Archaeological Survey of India.

From the terrace of an abandoned house, I saw the ruins of the houses of the villagers and I was feeling the curse of this place in its emptiness. Many people tried to resettle this village but as per locals, the ghosts of this village forced them to run away. There is also an abandoned temple inside this village.

We were astounded by the way the villagers constructed these mud houses with mud, straws and other organic stuffs. The weather outside was very hot yet it was cool inside the mud houses.
They also constructed the houses in such a way that every drop of rain water can be conserved as there is always scarcity of water in Jaisalmer.

We should learn saving water from those 200 years old civilization.
Truly speaking, I didn’t feel anything spooky there but the feeling of emptiness made me feel bad for those villagers who left this place.

Timings: Open all days till sunset.

Entry Fees: No entry charge is needed.

After exploring the entire Kuldhara Village, the cab dropped us to the Jaisalmer city. We reached Jaisalmer at 1:00 pm and decided to visit the Patwon Ki Haveli.

2. Patwon Ki Haveli

Situated near Patwa valley on the mid of the Jaisalmer city, Patwon Ki Haveli is an assortment of five stunning designed havelis constructed for five Patwa brothers. The construction of Patwon ki Haveli was started by a rich merchant Guman Chand Patwa and was finished by his sons as it took almost 55 years to complete.

The entire structure was constructed in yellow sand stones and these groups of havelis are famous for their beautifully engraved balconies (jharonkhas), passageways and archways and wall paintings. There are almost 60 jharonkhas in this structure which are very well preserved. Out of the 5 havelis, 2 are now managed by the Archeological Survey of India and one among them is converted into a museum. This grand heritage of Rajasthan is one of the popular tourist attractions of Rajasthan.

Next we went to Salim Singh ki Haveli which is positioned on the narrow lanes of Jaisalmer only 500 meters away from the Patwon ki Haveli. Therefore, we decided to walk along the narrow roads to reach Salim Singh Ki Haveli. There are no parking spaces near this haveli so, it is better to avoid car to reach this destination.

3. Salim Singh Ki Haveli

This 300 years old haveli is a masterpiece of art constructed by Salim Singh, a minister of the Jaisalmer Dynasty. The complete structure was erected by yellow sand stones and iron rods. The construction of this haveli is very unique with narrow ground and first floors and the top floor was extended by 38 elegantly arched jharonkhas with elaborate stone carvings.

When we came out of Salim Singh Ki Haveli it was already 4:30 pm. The evening ambiance was very pleasant and thus, we moved to the Gadisar Lake for a romantic boat ride. The Jaisalmer weather was cool and breezy near the lake side and the view was also awe-inspiring. It felt like I was watching some Bollywood movie.

4. Gadisar Lake

Gadisar Lake is one of the renowned tourist destinations of Jaisalmer. This lake was constructed by the first ruler of Jaisalmer, Rawal Jaisal. Later on, Rawal Garisisar renovated this lake.

Boating in Gadisar Lake

While boating, you will see many beautifully designed temples, chattris and ghats bordering the lake. This place is a paradise for the bird watchers, as jaisalmer is very near to Bharatpur bird sanctuary; many migratory birds come to this lake. Located only 2 kms away from the railway station of Jaisalmer, this lake is a nice sunset view point as well.

We enjoyed a lot while boating on the blue water of the Gadisar Lake.
